Ukrainian is the official language, but Russian is widely spoken in Ukraine too. If west of the country speaks mostly Ukrainian, eastern and central regions use more Russian than Ukrainian. Almost all the population of Crimea considers Russian to be their first language. Lately the government follows a policy of Ukrainization—the increase of Ukrainian language, generally at the expense of Russian. Actually, the population of Ukraine is bilingual.
