According to the legend it was built on the place where Prince Yaroslav the Wise defeated the Pechenegs (Asian tribes). In ancient times it linked the administrative part of the upper Podil with the lower town of merchants and artisans. Many people associate Andrew's Descent with Montmartre of Paris. Being at the very heart of the Kiev's art community the street is a favorite stop for tourists in search of paintings and traditional Ukrainian crafts, as well as a repository for souvenirs and different Soviet stuff. The elegant silhouette of Baroque church one large dome and five lesser cupolas are easy visible from Podil and beyond. Andrew's church was built in 1754 and is one of the most magnificent Christian Orthodox buildings n the city. According to the legend it has no bell towers because of a big well which is situated under the church and can wake up and overflow form the sound of bells. The One Street Museum is a charming little museum near the bottom of Andrew’s descent tells the rich history of this important street through the years. If you visit Andrew’s descent you can feel the atmosphere of the city in the end of 19-beginning of the 20 century.
