Simferopol is the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. The city is situated on the small Salhir River.

The climate is warm and dry, with soft winters. The average temperature in July is +21.2°Ð¡, in January –0.5°Ð¡. Within the city’s boundaries is situated a famous archaeological site known as Scythian Neapol, the remains of an ancient capital of the Crimean Scythians.
In Greek “Sympheropolis” means "the city of usefulness”. During the Crimean War of 1854-1856, the Russian army reserves and a hospital were located in the city. More than 30,000 Russian soldiers were buried in the vicinity of the city.
The population of Simferopol is consists mostly from ethnic Russians. There are also significant Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar minorities.
Simferopol has a railway terminus that serves millions of summer tourists each year, and the Simferopol Airport. The longest trolley bus line in the world connects Simferopol to Yalta on Crimea's Black Sea coast.
Simferopol differs from other Crimean cities because of the abundance of students. Its one of the biggest university centers in the south of Ukraine, many universities have wonderful museums, for example, Zoological Museum of Tavrian National University.
Architectural sites in the center Simferopol are remarkable thanks to Russian classicism with southern romantics. Buildings of 20-40s of the XX century, for example, “House-ship” are very interesting and revolutionary audacious.
