Chernivtsi is a historic city in the Northern Bukovina region of western Ukraine. Chernivtsi is a major point of railway and highway crossings in the region, and also has an airport.
The city is considered to have great history as one of Romania's greatest cultural and educational centers.
The name of the city comes from the word “Chern” (black). The walls of the city were built from dark oak layered with local black-colored soil. So the name of the city actually means “Black city”
Chernirvtsi became the center of the Ukrainian nationalist movement during the 19th and early 20th century.
The city used to have strong Jewish community, but after the collapse of Soviet Union in 1991, the majority of the Jewish population emigrated to Israel and United States.
