Donetsk is a city on the headwaters of the Kalmius River. It was founded in 1869 by John Hughes, a Welshmen who built here an ironworks in order to produce iron for the Russian rail network. By 1914 Donetsk had a population of about 50,000 and was rapidly growing. Now city is one of the largest metallurgical centers of Ukraine . It has a large railway and highway junction. Donetsk has an airport too.
