Inkerman is situated 5 kilometers east of Sevastopol, at the mouth of the Chernaya. The name of this place means “Cave fortess” in Turkish. During the Soviet time Inkerman was called Belokamensk what means “White stone city” because of a white stone quarried in the area and commonly used for construction.
In the 8th century Byzantine icon-worships founded a cave monastery of St. Clement here.
In the 14th century Kalamita, the fortress that was built in the 6th century, was expanded in order to become an important cliff top overlooking Inkerman. Unfortunately, now it lies in ruins.
Inkerman became famous during the Crimean War, when Inkerman was the scene of the Battle of Inkerman and the Battle of Chernaya River, victorious for the French and the British troops.
Today the town is also famous for being of the major Crimean wineries featuring the Inkerman label is located in the neighboring area. A popular hiking trace leading into Crimean Mountains begins just east of the town.
